Who’s in your community?
Today we want to take a look at how the concept of community has been redefined by the advent of the Internet, and how GetAssist will bring you closer to and get you more involved in the communities that are part of your life.
Community defined
The word “community” is derived from the Latin communitas (from Latin communis, things held in common), a broad term for fellowship or organized societies.
Traditionally, we think of a community as a group of people living near one another who interact socially. Naturally, it tends to refer to people who come together in a geographical sense, like one you might find evidence of when on an archaeological dig—but what about online? Do those count as communities?
What about digital communities?
While communities will always be referred to in a geographical sense, the Internet has brought us to a period where a community is now more of a social concept than ever before.
And many people living in a geographic community, like a neighborhood, don’t even know their own neighbors! They might not be involved in its preservation or activities—yet they all belong to their own online social communities.
Wikipedia defines community as “a group or network of persons who are connected (objectively) to each other by relatively durable social relations that extend immediate geographical ties, and who mutually define that relationship (subjectively) as important to their social identity and social practice.”
GetAssist builds on this notion; that a community is a group of any size of like-minded people who come together to exchange ideas, information and share their experiences with others who share location or whatever, whoever, and interact on a regular basis.
Communities are no longer defined by geographical boundaries
This makes each and every community a very personal thing that we must define for ourselves. In fact, at GetAssist we believe that you are probably already a member of many communities. These may include family, friends, workgroups and others who you are actively engaged with as part of your everyday life.
We recognize that having a sense of community is vital to all of our lives—whether it be a group of people in your town or a group of people across the world that share your same interests.
