6 places to spring clean

Organize, Clean, and Dispose to Make Room for a Home Renovation

Do you have trouble with a cluttered home or need motivation to complete your Spring Cleaning? This article is your one-stop solution! We’ll discuss areas in your home to remember to clean, organize, or cleanout and what fresh changes you can make space for.

Don’t Forget These Six Spots!

Homeowners tend to neglect a few areas when they’re Spring Cleaning.

  1. The pantry. When cleaning your pantry, Martha Stuart recommends emptying the entire thing and throwing away unused or expired items as you go. Meanwhile, inspect all of your products for damage and spoiling. Then, vacuum or dry brush the shelves and dip a microfiber cloth in dish soap and warm water. Wipe up spills and sticky spots. Then, rinse the shelves with clean water. For a more straightforward cleaning process in the future, consider buying shelf liners.
  2. The laundry room. Clean the film from detergent and softener buildup on your laundry appliances, inside and out, and vacuum or mop underneath them.
  3. Your vanity. Throw away your expired cosmetics. Most powder makeup lasts for a year. Mascara and liquid eyeliner usually expire in three to four months, while pencil products last three to five years.
  4. The coat closet. Throw out or donate coats, boots, and mittens that don’t fit anyone anymore. Keep your season essentials in front of the closet and put your Winter gear away in labeled bins.
  5. The shed and garage. Organize your seasonal items, moving your Winter recreational gear and property maintenance tools, such as your snow blower and shovels, to an out-of-the-way area to make room for your garden tools and potting supplies. If you have tools that are broken beyond repair, throw them away. Take other broken tools into a shop.
  6. The basement. Are there storage bins you haven’t opened in 5 years? Ask yourself if you will ever use the contents again. Check to make sure pests have not built nests or destroyed your put away belongings as well. It may be better to purge them and make room for something better!
